Kazuo Hirai has said that Sony will ship its 11 millionth PlayStation 3 before the end of the current financial year, and that the company will be pursuing a more aggressive development strategy in the future.
According to YomiuriOnline (as translated by Gamefront.de), Hirai has said that total PlayStation 3 shipments will reach 11 million by the end of the current financial year, which finishes on 31 March 2008.
According to the Hirai, the recent introduction of the cheaper 40GB PS3 has had a positive effect, and has helped re-establish “PlayStation as a games machine”. Not that we’ve ever associated it with anything other than gaming, but we’ll take his word for it.
However, while Hirai has said that a good pricing strategy is important, he said that Sony is looking to put a lot more effort and resources into software to ensure the PS3 has a better spread of games.
This should be good news for PS3 fans, as the PS3 has been in rich form of late (with the console boasting a decent spread of first and third party hits in recent months) – so if Sony can expand on that in the months and years to come, things should be looking very nice indeed.
